Only in a place the size of Greymouth!

Woman ordered to repay debt at $25 (less than 2 years to repay debt)

Judge "How much do you spend on smoking?"

Lady " I don't smoke and neither does my son who I support"

Judge "But you asked your son to buy $62 of tobacco at the supermarket on Monday"

Lady "No"

Judge went on to describe son in some detail including his other purchases

Lady "Oh that was Wednesday and it was his girlfriends money"

Judge "No it was Monday and at New World supermarket because I was behind you in the queue"

In one of those incidents that can only happen in a small town - Greymouth as it happens in this instance

Woman is in court owing over $2000 in unpaid rent. Says she has no discretionary money and can only afford to pay back at $2 per week (only 20 years to repay debt!!). Judge started asking questions - went something like this:
