Did you know that the pink for girls and blue for boys colour matching is relatively modern? Around the mid 1920s one of the big US clothing chains started putting all their boys in blue clothes and girls pink. For centuries before this blue was seen as the colour for girls because it was soft, gentle and feminine. All pictures of the Virgin Mary show her in soft pale blue. Red or dark pink was associated with aggression and seen as the better colour for boys.

If I got into conspiracy theories I would say it was Coca Cola's fault. However it is probably just coincidental that Coca Cola creating the fat jolly Santa Claus with red suit and white beard happened around the same time!!
