A fallen city

Today Tony and I went to see the movie based on Chch earthquakes. Film was started just after the September 2010 quake and then developed over the last 12 months. One of original crew was killed in Feb quake. We had expected it to be harrowing and so it was but incredibly well done. There is an image of Nick and India in which Nick looks shocked -given that it has to have been within an hour of the big quake not surprising. Richard Lord, (Liz and Noel's young friend - Maria you might remember them from various dinners at Eleys) was director of photography. The images are beautiful and disturbing. Also Garry Moore has interview on rebuild potential.

One of the images I found poignant is the statue of Godley, one of the early Chch founder/ planners fallen on his face. The film also showed parts of San Francisco that had recovered following their devastating quake in 1989? Similar in scale to Chch though deeper so fewer deaths. Also New Orleans post Katrina. The opportunities to rebuild in ways that stimulate growth. We can only hope that this opportunity is given toChch but don't feel incredibly optimistic about this.
