Significant date in history

100 years ago today 20,000 people gathered outside Buckingham Palace to seek votes for women Over 60 arrests were made that day including Emmaline Pankhurst. It was seen as the turning point in the suffrage movement. I can't imagine what kind of current issue would bring out 20,000 people - and in 1914 there were 1,000,000 fewer residents in London than there are now.

By this time NZ women had had the vote for 20 years but it would be 2 more years after the Buckingham Palace demonstration before Britain gave women the vote. Amazing.

Worth remembering in a NZ election year that the right to vote for some is recent history.
