Thought I'd share this Tom Scott from the paper this morning:

Mark, the context here is that the government has given several companies permits to explore world heritage sites and animal sanctuaries (including the protected area of Bank Peninsula with Hector's Dolphins) in New Zealand for oil, coal etc... despite huge protests in 2010 forcing them to back down on previous plans to mine on land protected by the Department of Conservation. John Key's defense of this latest move is that there are no plans for mining but "It doesn't hurt to have a look at what is there."
